Joost
CROSSPOSTED FROM IMAGESPACE--ARTS AND WEB 2.0
The creators of Kazaa and Skype have announced a partnership to create a Internet TV service called Joost.
Viacom had forced YouTube to remove all of its copyright content from the YouTube. It has announced that it will deliver content from its various interests like MTV, VH1 and Paramount.
Joost has announced a beta program to test the Interface. They have also announced that while it currently is Windows only, 250 Intel MacOS testers are in the process of working through a Mac version.
Services like Joost, YouTube, and Revver are going to turn the TV industry on its head. Already 20-somethings are spending more time online than watching TV. The networks are experimenting with delivering content on-line after the show has been aired. Apple has become a content delivery company with iTunes Music Store and now has a way to deliver that content to your TV. This kind of service can compete directly with companies like Blockbuster and Netflix.
WESTAF has been using digitized video in TourWest for two years now. This year will be the third year. But imagine if WESTAF were able to deliver the content directly to its panelists in the panelist's homes via a set top box? It is possible already provided there are enough DVRs to deliver the content to each panelist.
We are seeing a convergence of services/equipment more rapidly every day. I use my iMac to watch shows I have recorded on my ReplayTVs by streaming to a free application called VideoLan Client.
So Joost is just another piece in this interesting convergence. Will the company be successful? Who knows, but it sure is fun to watch.

Flickr Meltdown
CROSSPOSTED FROM IMAGESPACE--ARTS AND WEB 2.0
Last night Flickr had a caching meltdown. Basically when one opened up an image page the wrong image was displayed. What was supposed to be a fish from the aquarium opened up as a fashion model. It was a sort of strange experience. Then BLAM a splash page went up that read "Flickr is Getting a Massage" with a link to the Flickr Blog with updates.
Flickr made a good decision keeping folks abreast of exactly what was going on. They then followed up with a full explanation. Note that the node is called "crappola.html". It gave me a chuckle.
Apparently on a high traffic day, Flickr serves up a billion photos. That is astonishing. Images that were embedded in Web sites seemed to have been served up intact without a problem.
All in all I thought that it was refreshing that a company as big as Yahoo! would be as transparent as they were.

My Daughter's Laptop Redux
CROSSPOSTED FROM IMAGESPACE--ARTS AND WEB 2.0
My post over the last day or so regarding my daughter's "laptop" seems to have generated some pretty significant traffic. I'm not quite sure why. Traffic over the last 24 hours has surged about 10 times its normal amount.
Even the somewhat controversial post which covered several men of Arabic descent being escorted off a flight I was on last October gleaned less traffic.
Perhaps it is because I posted to the Mac|Life forum regarding it and Mac users tend to be quite passionate about the platform.
This is the kind of event that shows how very strange the Internet can be. What generates interest and what doesn't. In many case you CAN devine what will have interestingness (Flickr's term) and what will not.

My Headset...
CROSSPOSTED FROM IMAGESPACE--ARTS AND WEB 2.0
I finally found my headset. I suspected that one of my dogs had taken it, but I wasn't sure. They have been taking things into our backyard for months now. Usually it is just things like plastic glasses or straws. Sometimes the occasional box.
Buried under several feet of snow, chewed, mangled, and destroyed I found the headset this weekend.
This was the best headset I've owned. Oh well...

I picked my daughter up from daycare, and this is what she proudly showed me. Yep, she's an Apple gal. And only six!
