Another Net Neutrality Rant
It is hard for me to comprehend how the Internet ceasing being a level playing field will affect the arts industry in the United States. Most arts organizations have become increasingly dependant on Internet based services and software. These range from a Web site that has a theatre's season to grants applications for grant makers. If the field becomes un-level every one of these organizations models suddenly are at risk. Small organizations could be terribly affected.
An election is on its way in the US. Using social networks, clever Web sites, and a little money great candidates with little or no money can actually compete. In the last election, MoveOn played a strong roll in moving political figures forward. Removing net neutrality would give big businesses to power to reduce or remove this equalizer...at least unless the party or person pays protection money.
Techsoup has a terrific article looking at this issue from the prospective of the non-profit community.
Unfortunately, the general populace isn't aware of what would happen if Congress were to allow the flat nature of the Net to evaporate. So, do us all a favour. Talk to one person every day about Net Neutrality and our need to keep the Internet a level playing field.
